Beşli Price

Beşli altın, known in Turkish as "beşi bir yerde" (five in one place), is a large wedding ornament built around a core worth five full gold coins. The 22 karat (916 millesimal) core weighs approximately 35 grams, and a decorative frame with ornamental mounting is added around it. Versions with Republic-era portrait designs and Ottoman tughra-style designs both circulate in the market. It is usually prepared with a ribbon to be pinned on the bride and is considered one of the most prestigious pieces in Turkish wedding tradition.

The price of a beşli altın forms on top of the gram gold price. The pure gold content of the roughly 35 gram, 22 karat core is calculated first; frame and ornament workmanship plus the jeweler's margin are then added on top. Although the frame increases the gross weight, the core gold is what drives the price. The workmanship share varies from jeweler to jeweler depending on the size of the frame and the detail of the decoration, so different asking prices can be seen on the same day.

Beşli altın is almost entirely a product of wedding and engagement tradition. It is typically given by the closest family elders, often the mother, father or mother-in-law of the bride, and stands out as one of the most valuable pieces at a wedding. Demand rises noticeably during the wedding season that concentrates in spring and summer. It is not chosen for everyday saving; most buyers are families shopping for a specific wedding or engagement date.

The most important point when buying or selling is the frame workmanship. When a beşli altın is sold back, the jeweler pays only for the core gold; the workmanship paid for the frame and decoration is not recovered. As a result, the gap between buying and selling prices (the spread) is noticeably wider than for gram or quarter gold. Checking the karat stamp and preferring trusted jewelers who issue invoices matters. The product trades at jewelers and in the Grand Bazaar market, not at banks.
